Very nice location, near the city and a bus stop, but far enough to feel "in nature". The rooms were very spacious and the ryokan felt well cared for; everybody in the staff was well into or past middle age, so it was clear that they took their job a lot more seriously than a summer intern might. The in-house public bath was nice too. And given that it is very price competitive, you get an awful lot of bang for your buck.
The staff's English skills were somewhat on the poorer side (sort of the standard in Japan), so while you should be able to get around, order breakfast and dinner and pay your bill just fine, if you'd like anything more specific, you will need to be able to speak at least some basic Japanese.
The private bath and authenticity felt like we were having a traditional Japanese experience
More information on where to eat
The staffs, even they are not flent in English they really try their best to explain everyhting. The ryokan has a small shop at the ground floor so you can do the breakfast in some cheap way. The location is also nice its very near to the famous sacred bridge. Overall, its a very good ryokan and I would recommend it to any future tourist to Nikko.
A typical ryokan, a must for every visitor to japan. We were introduced into japan living stile and enjoyed every part of our stay, from our correct name at the shoe rack to the japanese breakfast. The ryokan is perfect located to the city bus stop and all temples are within easy walking distance. Real good value for money.
Close to temples, nice rooms, good Japanese breakfast, friendly staff.
Not so close to restaurants.
Everything was just perfect, but the staff really stood out as friendly and helpful people. A really warm atmosphere.
Everything was just lovely
Friendly staff. great room. Great location, within walking distance of all the temple and shrines - what more could you ask for!
Location is next door to all the temples in Nikko and the price cant be beat anywhere. Extra kudos my name was on a board outside of people arriving that day in English. We were all tuckered out and took a taxi from the temple area back to jr Nikko and its about 1100 yen. Great staff. Recommend asking about having dinner and breakfast at the hotel since nothing else is in the temple area for food.
The hotel is old, which could be seen in the walls of the room, but personally I think it added to experience of little inn japan. public bath, only a toilet and sink in the room. However the bath is open 23hours so your chance of running into a crowd is slim.
1 Hotel staff''s services 2 Dinner
Very good location (near all temples). Friendly staff. Very good breakfast (try it!). If you have a "no bathroom" room, you will still have toilets and sink in the room. Free shuttle to the station (unfortunately, you can only take in the morning for departure). Commun bathroom is an "o furo".
A bit dated decoration.
Very, very close to the Nikko shrine. Nice service from the staff and an orderly place with all facilities.
Great locations and nice and clean. Very welcoming.
Nikko Tokanso is really the best hotel I have stayed in Japan. The staff are absolutely wonderful and your room is quite large. The bathroom is fantastic and has a great view. The dinner was also quite amazing. It is situated quite close to the main shrines so everything is within walking distance.
The only problem is there is no English sign in front of the hotel, it is all in Japanese but other then that it is a perfect place to stay
I got the single room. The room is clean and warm (which was important since the outside temperatures were ~ 0 deg cel.) The room has no shower, only toilet and a sink. There is commute shower in a Japanese style which is quite nice and close to the room so it didn't bother me. It offers a good value for the money. Breakfast can be chosen in a European or a Japanese style, and were ok.
The room don't have a good place to store clothes, and most had to be left in the suitcase.
This place was spacious and had great charm. The woman at the front desk was a little ditzy, but it made her absolutely adorable. She couldn't do enough. Gave me handwarmers. Lovely garden in the snow. Excellent location. Onsen is a little shabby, but nice and clean. Breakfast was generous and amazing. Gift shop...
